Athens is known by all, however, with such a long and varied history, it’s difficult to fully know the capital of Greece. Once a powerful city-state in classical times, birthplace of democracy and drama, rhetorics and philosophy, cradle of western civilisation. Today, looking out from the acropolis, its history written in stone melds with the ever expanding city of 4 million, and one of the biggest economic centers in Southeastern Europe. Through crisis and competition the city continues to make progress. It joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2016, as it continues to draw upon a proud yet distant past to lead the country into the 21st century.
