Is democracy in danger? In this course we take a closer look at how it evolved from an Italian perspective, including the challenges it’s currently facing and ways to protect, participate and improve it.
This course also aims to uncover the history of European nations as each participant chronicles democracy’s progress based on their own proud unique European history, in order to inspire their students and future generations, and preserve and improve upon the progress made together.
Venice, with about 1,500 years of history serves as the base for our unique democratic journey, starting across the Adriatic in Athens with tyrannical beginnings, and then on to Rome’s republic. We then move east to Phillipi and the legendary battle following Caesar’s assassination and finish in Venice.
On this journey we will look at the elements that allow a healthy democracy to thrive, using Greek and Italian history intertwined with the presence, absence and advancement of forms of rule, with the ultimate goal of each participant uncovering their own unique European democratic story along the way. Through real world history, activities and interactive lessons, our goal is to develop tools and empower participants to share their own unique story, in order to inspire their students and future generations. With historical site visits, workshops/presentations and pedagogical activities we aim to strengthen and develop historical and intercultural awareness, pedagogy, critical thinking, active citizenship, and storytelling while embracing our rich cultural heritage together and building towards a progressive future.
